June 21 Adherents of Senator Lorimer had their Innings today to-day before the senate committee Investigating Investi-gating his election, when Hugh McLean of North Tonawanda, N. T.. and John McLeod of Buffalo. N. Y.. both lumbermen, lumber-men, swore that they knew absolutely nothing about the raising of a fund to elect Senator Ijorlmer. Both men came to Washington on different dif-ferent oceaaloiis as memoers of delegations delega-tions Interested in lumber legislation, each time meeting Edward r". Hlnes, the Chicago lumberman, who we charged with saying he raised money to "put Lorimer over at Bprlngfleld." Mr. McLean testified that the only thing Mr. Hlnes had ever mentioned to him about the Lorlmer election was that the newspapers onlv printed one eloe of the matter. Mr. Hlnes was today excluded from the room where the eenmte committee Is holding hold-ing Its Investigation Into the election of Senator Lorimer. This action was taken by the committee at an executive session. Put Klnse Out. Tlie committee considered It Inadvisable that Mr. Hlnes should be permitted to listen lis-ten to the testimony, glnoe Clarence 8. Funk of Chicago took the stand, Mr. Hlnes has been allowed to be present tn the committee room and hear the witnesses wit-nesses whose evidence largely had centered cen-tered about his alleged remarks about rhe Lorimer election expense. Rush Curver, a lawyer and lumberman lumber-man of IArse. Mich., was the first witness. wit-ness. When the lorimer Investigation was on before the Helm -committee of the Illinois leailslure tihelly B. Mich., was reported to have stated that Culver was present on an oo- casion in ivcy wnen Brfiwern mnrw. millionaire mil-lionaire lumberman, declared he Had "Just succeeded in making a United States senator that cost $lio,(KH)." Jones testified veaterday that the conversation con-versation was In 107 and simply a statement state-ment that Lortmer'e selection, presumably presuma-bly to the house, probably "coat a barrel of monejr." . As soon as Mr. Culver was sworn the committee went Into executive session, sfter which he began his testimony by saving that he had been mayor of Marquette. Mar-quette. Mich. He then told of business relatione with Edward Hlnes. Culver Contradicts Hlnes. Contradicting Hlnes testimony at the BprtngHeld Investigation, he said he had not seen Hlnes since Lorimer's slectlon to the I'nited States senate. "1 have no recollection of discussing Senator lorimer with Hlnea. On one or two occasions he told me he wss friendly to Lorimer, and It seems to me once In Chicago-1 saw some wagons of the Edward Ed-ward H tries' Lumber company decorated with Vote for Lorimer.' "It seems, too. that Mr. Hlnes has said to me that he had been In the habit of helping out Senator Larimer. He certainly cer-tainly referred to congressional elections.
