Show EIGHTEEN CASH PRIZES OFFERED BY TELEGRAM IN BIG ESSAY CONTEST ACTIVK work began this morning in The Telegram's George Washington essay contest, which is open to students in every grade and high school in the state. Kightcen cash prizes are being offered by The Telegram to winners of the contest. These will be in addition to honorable eoinmendation from leading educators of the state. The life of tieorge Washington and his greatest gift to civilization civiliza-tion must be the theme of all the papers. The contest will close on Washington's birthday, February 22, and will be judged by three prominent educators of the state to be appointed by Dr. (ieorge Thomas, state superintendent of public instruction, and George X. Child superintendent of the Salt Lake City schools. The purpose of tho contest is to inculcate into every student mind the Americanism and citizenship exemplified by the immortal -vV'4tmfrni The tndiridwaltty of the e onte wtants w not 'to-he-harnessed by rigid rules. The essays are intended to interpret the student's conception of patriotism and citizenship through discussion dis-cussion of the life and achievements of Washington. Highest commendation of the enterprise is given by Dr. Thomas and Mr. Child. They have characterized the contest as a step further toward better citizenship and are lending their support, together with other educators of the state, in encouragement of competition in the contest. The contest opened today. The winners will be adjudged as soon after February 22 as possible. Students of every high school and grade school in the state are eligible to compete. Following are the rules of the contest : Essays must not exceed 800 words in length. Neatness, legibility, punctuation and general appearance of manuscripts will be considered in determining the winners. All essays should be addressed to the Ejsay Contest Editor of The Telegram. Only one side of paper must be written upon. All manuscripts must be in The Telegram office not later than midnight on February 22. Students of universities and colleges of the state will not be eligible. - - - - Winners of the contest will be judged by educators appointed by the superintendents of state and city schools. The decisions of the judges will be final. Now, altogether, boys and girls, let's prove that Utah's young citizenry has the proper high conception of what patriotism and Americanism really mean. Also that the standard of citizenship laid down by Washington is the beacon light for the advancement of all youthful Americans in the state of Utah. |
