Show FIRE DAMAGES CANDYFACTORY With county firemen's efforts hampered by efforts of volunteers, fire Monday morning, said to have started from hot ashes in a wooden box on the rear porch, caused 1!W)0 damage at a candy factory at 2334 South State street. County Fire Chief Jack Clay said in an effort to help remove furnishings furnish-ings volunteers smashed windows, which caused drafts to spur the flames along. The factory was occupied by Ol-fred Ol-fred Krough and the building was owned by Mrs. Anna Peterson. At Truman avenue. Chief Clay said he understood the loss to have been covered by insurance. Firemen fought a freak blaze at .1:24 D. m. Sunday at a service eta- tion at 180 East Broadway, where gasoline from a leaking hose rode rain water to the gutter to become ignited when a clgaret was thrown into the gutter, creeping back to the pump to do S2S damage. Firemen donned gas masks to fight a blaze at the two-story brick dwelling occupied by Paul Farley at 38 J street when an overheated chimney started a fire that ignited rags and clothing in a basement room, resulting in 1.150 damage. |
