JUDGMENT DAYS Editor of The Telegram: God is displeased with the American people or He would not visit upon them the judgments they are now enduring, with the appalling loss of life, property and toll in human suffering. The United States is the richest and one of the most powerful and enlightened nationa of the earth. For the most part its people profess pro-fess Christianity. Yet so callous, selfish and heartless have we become be-come that we withdraw within ourselves and close our eyes and ears to the worst outrages that have ever been perpetrated the ruthless blasting, bombing and burning to death of literally thousands thou-sands of defenseless women, children chil-dren and old men, without even so much as raising our voices in protest lest we offend the Godless God-less perpetrators of these outrages, out-rages, but content ourselves with singing the soothing strains of "neutrality." God ia a merciful but just being. He sacrificed his only begotten Son to give to the world the new law of unselfishness, justice, mercy and service. He has been .exceedingly kind to the people of this country, but these favors are not without their obligation. Christ taught the principle of "Man his brother's keeper." America has flagrantly shirked its civic world duties, as the foremost fore-most nation of the earth. By this I do not wish to imply that it was incumbent upon us to have rushed a punitive expedition to Spain to protect the people's democratic government and ths helpless women wo-men and children against the unwarranted un-warranted assaults of General Francisco Franco's rebels, backed by the Italian and German dictators; dicta-tors; but I do say that America has a definite obligation in connection con-nection with the collective movements move-ments which have been instituted to preserve the peace of the world and uphold the rights of smaller, weaker nations, and we should have the courage to condemn In no uncertain terms such outrages as have been perpetrated in Spain and Ethiopia. We all want peace, but let It be an honorable peace and one which is not purchased at the price of our honor, dutv and self-respect C 8. W ILKINSON. |
