Show "Made in Germany" While none of us is in a mood to .stand for the "nude in Gtrnuny" trademark, the boycott against rrducts of the Hun factories may seriously menace the collection of the indemnity it is certain Germany will he required to pay the victorious allies. The llun faces the problem of heinj; a commercial outcast and yet being required to gain wealth to pay his war debt. Of course, it is his problem and it is up to him to solve it. Our sympathies are tTot such as to make us care much what happens to the llun, but aide from the sentimental there is a strict business issue and it must be faced. , Conceding that the allies will demand of Germany a vast number num-ber of billions of dollars, how can Germany pay this sum if she be not aided in the creation of wealth, or, at least, allowed an opportunity oppor-tunity to reestablish herself in business? Germany cannot pay un- less she lias the money, anftThe xannot get the money unless bhc sells her goods. Russia, Holland, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and Turkey may offer Germany a market, but not great enough to pcr-jnit pcr-jnit her to resume anywhere near her former prosperous commercial commer-cial condition. There is a second consideration and that is the continued menace of Germany if the country be kept in poverty. Bolshevism and anarchy feed upon poverty. The antidote is prosperity, work for all, living wages, education. Europe cannot permit anarchy to continue In its very center and for this reason must assist in restoring restor-ing a stable government in Hunland. We have broken Germany. It is now our duty to assist in . putting her. together again, for only by so doing can we guarantee future peace. We would not lessen one iota the punishment Germany Ger-many so richly merits; we cannot undertake to welcome her back among the respected nations until she has been cleansed of her multifold sins, but we do confess that the country presents a problem, prob-lem, commercial and political, that will require the greatest of statecraft to successfully solve. j |
