Show , Edith Gavell , Tomorrow will mark the third anniversary of the death of idith Cavell, heroic British nurse, murdered at the hands of a German executioner. German barbarity struck a note of acute brutality when this noble woman became one of its victims. Today, throughout the civilized world, preparations, are being be-ing made for the morrow to pay homage to one, .who in the name of mercy, tended wounded British and French soldiers in Belgium. Representatives of the Hun oppressor branded ier as a spy and ordered her execution. Calmly, and as nobly as she lived, she died. She "expiated" her "crime" of kindly attention to the suffering by death inflicted by a band of murderers. 1 This stoically heroic figure of the war may be likened to . France's Joan of Arc. Joan of Arc was an inspiration to the ' French. Edth Cavell, more In death than In life, is an inspiration inspira-tion to a decent world urging It to crush the huge monster responsible respon-sible for the wholesale slaughter of innocents. The execution of Edith Cavell caused a tremendous increase in enlistments in, Great Britain. Britons rose in vengeance . and - with the men of other nations are -now punishing the bullies responsible re-sponsible for the crime.' It is small wonder, therefore, that Salt Lake tomorrow will join with the est of the allied nations in honoring the memory of Edith Cavell. Persons drawn from all walks of life will shower flowers upon the afflicted In the hospitals. The ceremonies will clearly manifest that Edfth Cavell and the gallant soldiers of democracy did not die in vain. Their honor and glory will live forever. |
