Show SALT LAKE CITY NEWS IN BRIEF Area Sets Enlistment Record During 1940 j A new peacetime record of enlistments en-listments in th army, navy, marine ma-rine corps and coast guard was established in the intermountaln area in 1940. a survey of Salt Lake -district recruiting offices, shows. Voluntary enlistments in the four branches of the service totaled 1T21 men. Every branch showed large gains. Army enlistments totaled to-taled 2039, while the navy's num-bered num-bered 1016. a figure which led all districts of th western recruiting division in quota requirements. Marine recruits totaled 499, and while figures wer not available, th coast guard showed considerable consider-able activity, said Chief Boatswain L. J. Kirstine, recruiting officer. Veteran Firemen Retire Two Salt Lake City firemen wer taking it easy Wednesday, having been retired at th end of th year. They are Assistant Chief William J. Hancock, who started his fir fighting career In 1914. and F. E. Gruendell, whos servic dates back to 19K.
