Show Nelson and Watts Gain Honors ' In Aggie Cross-Country Run Special 'to The Telegram - LOGAN. March 30 Sophomore pale Nelson became the first Utah Aggie athlete to gain a track and field letter for the 1940 season when he won the annual spring cross-country run here Friday afternoon. aft-ernoon. r Nelson negotiated the windy two and a half mile course In 13:30 minutes to lead all entries to the tape by more than 50 yards. Last spring. Nelson led both varsity and froah distance men to the finish lne as he won the freshman portion por-tion of the race in 13:00.1. The freshman numeral, awarded ' ' I to the first frosh to finish Friday, went to Burnis Watts, former Springville high athlete. WatU finished fin-ished fourth in the race, behind Nelson, Albert Burton and Lawrence Law-rence Davis. It was a hot race between WatU and Ralph Hobson. another frosh, but WatU sprinted at the finish to win. Roland Mather, a Smithfield youth not In college, entered the race and finished fifth, with Hob-son Hob-son Uklng sixth, and Walter Pos-ner. Pos-ner. another freshman, seventh. Following the cross-country run, AssisUnt Coach Ken Vanderhoff conducted try-outs in all track and field events. |
