Show EXPENSIVE SYMPATHY Almost six years ago waiters at the Edgewater Beach hotel In Chicago walked out In the middle of a big banquet ban-quet as a demonstration of sympathy tor six striking electricians. Ever since pickets have marched up and down In front of the hotel, apparently without Interfering with the hotel's patronage and profits. But It was a costly business busi-ness for the striking waiter and their union. The strike, which was the longest In the history his-tory of American labor, has now been settled "to everyone's satisfaction." As far as the union's satisfaction Is concerned, we'll (amble It's because they've at last written off a terrible terri-ble mistake a sympathy strike that lasted almost six years. It may have set a record for American labor, but it's a record they cant be very proud of or want to remember as a high-water high-water mark of labor activity. |
