Show VOICE OF THE PEOPLE ly Telegram Readers Perhaps there Is method in the madness of the state road commission in keeping Utah distances dis-tances a secret from those who travel the highways. However, I should think It would average out to the benefit of the cities themselves to provide this Information Infor-mation so that motorists can determine for themselves whether wheth-er they want to stay the night in the city they then are In. or want to make it to the next one. A. T. Salt Lake City. S. L People, Leaders Urged To Push Civic Program Editor, Telegram: We who brag so much about the future of Utah should have a little more confidence ourselves In that future. . .There is a terrible inclination to "undersell" our own potentialities poten-tialities by many leaders of the community. The city is In dire need of action by the city commission on the master plan . . . which has remained tabled In committee for several years. Despite our vaunted wide streets and the myth of our per-fectivity, per-fectivity, the plain simple fact is that Salt Lake U behind the times. While other cities of smaller size and less problems have gone ahead with development of plaza sections for city and county buildings,' we have dallied. dal-lied. While other communities have provided civic centers for their people; we have done nothing. While other cities have courageously cour-ageously attacked the problem of parking by construction of underground ramps and strict laws calling for off-street parking, park-ing, we have not moved. I say this not to impugn the motives or deprecate the efforts of a valiant few who have led the fight for these projects. It Is the apathy of the people themselves, and lack of determined deter-mined leadership in the commission, commis-sion, which is to blame. The way to do a thing ts to do it Costs will never be any cheaper, cheap-er, prices will never be any lower than they are now, to any substantial degree. In fact they probably will go higher over the years if the history of our economy econo-my is taken Into account (And so will wages, property values and taxes along with them.) But the tragic ineptitude of sitting on our hands while there Is work to be done to keep our community in pace with industrial indus-trial development of the area should be remedied. We could use a great big dose of that pioneer courage, vision and common sense that enabled the settlers to bring this desert area to life 100 years ago. Pro Bono Publico. Dearth ef Distanet Signs On Reads Rriagt tlast Editor, Telegram: I have noticed one roadside' lack In Utah, especially along our main highways, that probably results In confusion to tourists and those residents who are not well acquainted with their state. I refer to the sparsity of road signs Informing the motorist the distance from city to city. On a number of highways, if I recall correctly, there are signs pointing the way to Ogden, or to Provo. or to Salt Lake City, but these signs do not mention highway high-way distances. Almost every other state in the west provides ' this roadside service to its travelers trav-elers so that when they reach highway junctions or cities, they can glance at a signpost and tell how far it is to the next city. Some of the highways, such as the one up Parley's canyon, tell distances to smaller towns to the east but the main highway from Ogden through Salt Lake City to Provo has few, If any, of this type of sign. |
