"There "Vill be a meeting bt the State ilental hospital board on Thursday, at which" a thorough examination will be commenced, and every detail of the case will be most searchingly probed. If there is any proof of cruelty on the part of any one connected with the institution . ' that person' will be instantly discharged and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. But r do not appreciate the publication by the newspapers of the statements tf a crazy man as truth, as such militates against the institution. No such thing as Marine alleges has ever happened in the - institution in. the past. The superintendent is a humane man; he is kind and gentle in is treatment of the patients and has invariably treated ; them as they ougnt to be treated. Learning that she believed him dead. Marine was brought down to her. '..., Wounds Were Self-inflicted. ' "There were sores on his hands and face which were self-inflicted by scratching and she' made a remark about him having quarreled with someone." some-one." : I Dr. Hardy emphatically denies that Marine was ever beaten or treated cruelly. One. night Marine attacked Gatherum, the attendant and hit him on the head, inflicting a serious scalp wound. Gatherum had to use force to get away from Marine and called another an-other attendant to assist him.. In Jhe struggle the lantern carried by the at-tedant at-tedant fell and was broken, and Marine cut himself on the fragments. . ' t . The next morning. Dr. Hardy says. Marine went into convulsions, and in falling, struck his bead on a wash stand, inflicting severe bruises. No Straitjacket Used. The nearest approach to one is a long-sleeved long-sleeved Jacket of denim which is used when the hands of the patient must be tied. .The sleeves are tied at the sides r back. , . The hanging by the thumbs the "doctor "doc-tor thinks almost too ridiculous to merit a denial, and, of course, he says was not true, the management of the patients pa-tients beiny conducted strictly upon humanitarian lines. ; He also said that Sheriff Harmon and County Attorney Page had Investigated the, case and were satisfied that the charges of cruelty were not based upon tangible grounds i - i !
