Show Politics .'end Adytrrisins. ' A new political method has beentried and found successful. " It is advertising ',' The 'campaign just concluded was remarkable for it. Space in newspapers and magazines was taken ta-ken and paid for by the political managers and it had the desired effect: W. L. Douglass,' who was elected Governor of Massachusetts on the Democratic ticket, advertised the fact that he was a' candidate extensively. He tad always been a liberal advertiser of his business and he reasoned that what would prove successful In business would be equally good in politics. So he advertised. Every man, woman and child in Massachusetts Massa-chusetts knew that he was a candidate and knew why he believed he should be elected. Of course Douglass was well known and his fair treatment of labor made him popular, but the advertising was a, potent factor. ' The Republican national committee advertised. It had good advertisements, too, well written and . convincing. Evidently they brought results. Advertising does wonders nowadays, and it is remarkable that the politicians did not think of employing em-ploying it before. It is a decided improvement upon the old method of campaigning. Instead of the spellbinder spell-binder who bores 'far oftener than he entertains and who seldom succeeds in convincing for the reason that those whom he, addresses are generally of his own political faith, we shall have the advertisement, neatly pet in handsome type and appearing in the publications that go into the homes of members of till parties. It will be in keeping with the tendency of the press to break away from party affiliations. The simon-pure party organ is ceasing to have much influence. The day of mud slinging and abuse has passed. The journal that has the widest influence nowadays is independent of party. It gives the political po-litical news, expresses its own views dispassionately and with moderation and leaves its readers to form their own opinions. Like the spellbinder the party organ rarely convinces because it is not read by members of the opiosition party. : But the advertisement hits the mark. It does not commit the paper in which it appears to the ' -' iews expressed in the advertisement and it reaches those whose attention it is desired to attract without with-out giving them offense. But, like the merchant who expects to profit by its advertising, the party that advertises must "deliver "de-liver the goods." It will not do to make promises in an advertisement with no intention of living up to them. Honesty is one of the vital principles of advertising. ad-vertising. ' . The political advertisement has arrived and it has come to stay. ' |
