Show kidnaped" for drudge Girl Sajs She Was Stolen and Forced to Do Hard Labor. NEW YORK, Dec. 13. Lulu Mc- j Laughlln, who disappeared mysterious- ly from her home In Newark, N. J., on ' June 15, 1903, has been brought back to that city and restored to her mother 1 by a detective, who says he found her In Manorklll. in the Catsklll mountains. The girl, who is 14 years old, tells a story of having been kidnaped by a woman, taken to Manorkill and compelled com-pelled to do all kinds of drudgery on a farm there. She says she repeatedly tried to communicate with her parents, but was so closely watched that she had no opportunity of mailing a letter or getting any word to them of her plight. Since the girl's disappearance her father fa-ther has died. The detective says he found the girl at the home of Mrs. Klizabeth Rooke, in Ma nor kill. Lulu says that Mrs. Rooke, who formerly- lived In Newark, told her one day that she was going away and aaked the girl how she would like to go along. The child replied that she would ask her mother about it, but was promptly cautioned by Mrs. Rooke, she says, not to speak to her mother. Mrs. Rooke a few days later proposed that the girl go with her daughter to Plalnfield on a visit, and the child consented. con-sented. From Plalnfield, she says, she was brought to New York, where she was met by Mrs. Rooke, who took her on a steamboat to Manorkill. |
