Show ARGUMENT BEGUN " - IN BURTON'S TRIAL ST. LOUIS, March 2. In the trial of United States Senator J. R. Burton of Kansas, Postofflce- Inspector" "W. J. Vickery of Cincinnati was placed on the stand today to testify in rebuttal as to the testimony given yesterday by CoL I W. W. Smith, private secretary to Senator Sen-ator Burton. Inspector Vickery stated 1 that he had listened to the testimony -of CoL Smith, in which the latter had stated that as Chief Postofflce Inspector Cochran was leaving the Senator, id company with himself, Cochran said to Burton: ' "I know. Senator, that you did not represent any one in any department for compensation." - Vickery testified that no such statement state-ment was made by Cochran. H. L. Dyer, assistant United States District Attorney then opened the arguments ar-guments for the Government. No limit was placed on ths time for argument by either side. ' ' , |
