Show Yv M. C. A. end tht Chiuffiur Problem We are7 to have another example of muscular Christianity. -The New York Young Men's Christian Associa-v Associa-v tioh is to educate its young men to run automobiles. The press dispatches say the conclusion has been reached that there are too many careless and dishonest dis-honest chauffeurs in the metropolis, and that the only way to remedy the evil is p o secure young men of character and integrity. ; We confess we are unable to see wherein an hon-' est chauffeur is going to add much to the safety of the public We believe it would be just as painful to be run over by a Y. M. C. A. young man as to be the victim of one who dallied with the festive jackpot jack-pot and neglected to pay his debts. That may be a matter of taste, however. ' The main thing is to get chauffeurs who have some scruples against murder and manslaughter. So far as carelessnesses concerned the idea is excellent If the Y. M. C. A. can turn out a lot of drivers who will be content to go through crowded streets at a speed a trifie less than that of an express ex-press train, the organization will have accomplished a great deal. But when the owner tells the driver to . let It go for all. it is worth, what is the young man going to do? If he fails, his job becomes merely a memory, and if he obeys orders, what benefit will his Y. M. C- A. training have been to himself or to the public? ' There is much to be said, in praise of the Y. M. C. A. It has accomplished many things for the youth of the land, but we hardly think it will prove equal to settling the automobile problem. A few fearless magistrates who will send reckless owners of machines ma-chines to jail will be a whole lot more valuable. |
