Show What Keps Utah Behind Other State? Now and then Former United States Senator Cannon gives his brother Mormons some wise advice. ad-vice. His latest effort along this line is the following follow-ing editorial which he prints in his paper, the Utah State Journal: "What Utah has. need to regret and fear is the unenviable notoriety given to the State and the people peo-ple by the constantly recurring sensations in which she is involved. But for this the State might have more than half a million people at the present time, with a proportionate increase in business and wealth of the community. The retardation of her material growth must be to all the people of Utah most deplorable In point of resources the State is the best in the intermountain country and yet it does not grow as fast in proportion as either Colorado Colo-rado or Idaho. There is much reason to hope and there is some little reason to believe that when the Smoot case shall have run its course the lessons offered of-fered by recent experiences will have been well learned by the people, and that men like Senator Smoot, and the voters generally, will avoid giving provocation to the world for controversy out of which comes but disaster for Utah." No one will deny that Utah possesses more rich natural resources that nine out of ten of the States in the Union. Why, then, is it that in point of growth Utah is behind Colorado, Idaho and other States that are not as rich in natural resources and other advantages? . Some influence is undoubtedly at work that is retarding re-tarding the progress whlen should be expected of such a State as Utah. Perhaps the Smoot inquiry will result in bringing order out of chaos and in a measure reforming the conditions which are responsible respon-sible for the stagnation at development work in this State. ' . Let us all hope with Editor Cannon that things will take a turn in this direction and that after the Smoot inquiry ends everybody will obey the law and the people will unite in a determined effort to build, up the State.. |
