The second an- nual report of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, Just issued, deals largely with the bacteriological investigation investi-gation of children affected with different forms of bowel trouble. j The report declares that dysentery Is contagious and that the use of anU-dls-enterlc Is not proved a success. Nearly half of the children treated with the se- rum died and in only a few cases did a noteworthy improvement follow its administration. ad-ministration. - The Investigators, however, how-ever, have not yet given up hope of using us-ing the serum to advantage, and the experiments ex-periments will be continued. The Rockefeller Institute was founded ' by John D. Rockefeller in June, 1901, with an initial gift-of $200,000. all of which' was to be expended in research. N Bo far the experts connected with the I institute have devoted themselves large-' large-' ly to children's diseases. The scope and facilities of the institute will soon be increased in-creased by the erection of a laboratory wHich will cost $300,000. ' : Twelve bacteriologists had charge of ' the Investigations of dysentery in children, chil-dren, and the work was divided among "laboratories In New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Baltimore.
