Show MAYOR IS BARRED OUT Not Permitted to Delircr " an Address at a Labor Convention. AURORA, 111., Oct. 13. For the first . time In twenty-two years the Illinois State Federation of Labor convention was opened without a welcome from the Mayor" of the city In which it was held. According to E. R. Davis, president of the Aurora Trades Assembly, the Mayor is the greatest enemy of organized labor la-bor in Illinois. - ' "Mayor John Raymond cannot address ad-dress a union meeting in Aurora," said President Davis. "He Is the attorney of the Employers' association that has endeavored for two years to crush the labor organizations. He secured seventy seven-ty permanent' injunctions- against 400 girls locked out by a corset company for objecting to a reduction In wages, and gave bond for the company." The Federation of Labor delegates applaud President Davis for the stand taken by the Aurora trades unionists. President Barney Cohen threw another anoth-er bombshell into the convention. In his report he 'declared that the working-men of the State should organize politically po-litically to secure legislation for their own good. "Far be It rrom my purpose to talk to you as a partisan politician," said he. "It Is probable that there are many here belonging to all political parties that are known. But I want to say here and now that It is my opinion that many of the evils that now exist will be remedied when the day comes that the workingman will cast aside party ties and vote for himself. I would, therefore, recommend that you consider consid-er the advisability of taking steps to organize politically throughout the State, so that we may be in a position to force legislation favorable to us." |
