Van.Aken, and Joseph CLark, s All approaches to the depot were roped off for a block in each direction. . . r . .- , 4 When the t President alighted from the train he 'remarked on the beautiful day and said he had a good night's rest and was feeling well. - The route of the parade extended over two mllas , of gayly decorated streets . which were packed on. each side with a solid mass of people. A large crowd was gathered on the Market square. . Mayor Joseph Boscheri welcomed the President in behalf Of the city of La Crosse in a short address. The President's speech. was frequently interrupted by applause. He extended a greeting- to the people of La Crosse, especially to the old veterans, & large number of whom were among his hearers. hear-ers. He compared the war of 1861-65 to that with Spain and said that while the commanders of the lesser war did not have a big Job to do tbey did It. but the trouble was there was not enough war to go around. He then discussed the virtue of good citizenship and re- ' f erred to portions of his speech deliv-ered deliv-ered at Waukesha regarding citizens of-this of-this country speaking evil of other na- - ' tlons. . .
