SALTAIE Bathing, Old Mill, Scenic Railway, etc. LAGOON Shoot the Chutes, Boiler Skating, etc. ' The Orpheum theater opened its vaudeville season last night. The playhouse, which has just been retouched, waa crowded. The interior in-terior decoration in old rose with a light tan ceiling, with garlands of roses, is pretty and effective. The bill presented this week has only one redeeming feature, the Dog and Monkey Mon-key act. The animals ara well trained and are put through some clever stunts by Prof. Macart. The comedy features are poor, and the magician's tricks show nothing remark-, remark-, abl. The worst feature la the 7' Majestic Trio," which presents three negroes in song and dance acts. The effect of a negro aping a negro is always incongruous and disgusting. disgust-ing. Their attempted Indian act was not success either. There will be matinees on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Miss Georgia Harper is a wbmsn of talent. All who have witnessed her performances at the Grand unite in ssying that she is an actress of great capability. In an emotional role such as she assumes in "Coralie' now running at that house, she has a wonderful command of expression. One fsult she needs to overcome, at least in the Grand, is 'peaking 'peak-ing too low. Much of the effect is lost in ber enunciation, while her facial expression is all that could be desired. In her support Joseph Jo-seph Detriek is entitled to special notice. He ia a capable young actor, speaks his lines well and is good to look upon in such a role as thst of Capt. Danial. The remainder of the support averages well. "Coralie" will be agiii to tpM n.rt tomorrow nieht. Knr the last half of the week "All the Comforts of Home" will be given. There wilt be a matinee mat-inee Saturday. "Blue Jeans" will open Sunday Sun-day night. .. Despite adverse weather conditions. Zinn's Travesty company made a splendid impression last night on its reappearance after an absence ab-sence of six weeks. Rain drove the production produc-tion of "Courtship in Japan" from Casino rark to the Lyric theater and there was not time enough to transfer the special scenery and lighting effects to the house. Prof. Zinn, however, has his company and his dancing girls under splendid control, and a smooth and even performance was given. A distinct, bit was made by the "upside down dance," a novelty even on the roof gardens of New York. A doien merry maiden a, with heels in air, go through the maneuvera of a dance with rhythmic regularity, making a decidedly de-cidedly artistic effect. The crowd went wild and the dancing girls responded to encore after encore. Then Zelby Roach, the comedian, come-dian, made good with the crowd by doing an "upside down" himself that was grotesque and amusing. "Courtship in Japan" is a travesty on several popular musical productions produc-tions and has plenty of life and ginger in it. Prof. Zinn has some good singers as well as the finest bunch of dancers that has struck town in many a day. The engagement at the Casino promises to be a hummer. |
