Show GEN. W. R. SHAFTER. He gave all his life, after reaching manhood, to bis country'8 service until retired. He was a brave, competent soldier everywhere. His last battle he directed from a sickbed; chafing over the infirmity which prevented him from being at the front. He earned promotion after promotion until the coveted cov-eted stars shone on his shoulders. His body should be borne to Arlington and given sepulcher with the shining band who were his companions com-panions in the past. It is our national mausoleum, and he has earned a place there; there with Stanton and Crook and Porter and Sheridan and the others who shook the world only such a little while ago. Peace to him and undying fame. |
