Show HOGS DYING BY SCORES WHEN KILLED FOR SALE, SAYS WITNESS HARRIS Charles Pratt and George G., Smith! Former Mayor John Clark was challenged chal-lenged ' by the defendants' attorneys and was excused. In response to questions put tovMr, Harris by Assistant County Attorney Wlllard Hanson, he declared that he had known Barton and Herbert since; last November: He said that about th$ first of January the big- colony of hogs maintained at the ranch commenced tc die. He said that there were dead hogs lying about the barn, along th road and in the shed. Some were piled in groups of four or five. At one tlnu he said he found fifty dead hogs aboul the place. "One that I noticed," said the witness, wit-ness, "had a big decayed spot on the side of Its nose that seemed to be eating eat-ing into the bone. Another hog had a big sore on its legs. The hogs staggered stag-gered and were hardly able to walk. The last time I 'was there there were seven hogs and six of them were sick." "Were any of that herd of hogs killed Hogs were dying by the score at the Barton ranch during the time that the animals were being killed for market, according to the testimony given before Judge Dlehl today in the hearing of the charge against Capt. H. A. Barton and T. M. Herbert, who are alleged to have sold diseased hogs in the local market The only witness heard this morning morn-ing was Benjamin R. Harris. He asserted as-serted that several of the animals that were sent to the market were covered with large red spots, and that the condition con-dition of the ranch was "deplorable." Several of the animals that were about the pens he -said were afflicted with sores that were apparently eating Into the bone. The defendants were represented in court this morning by Attorneys A. J. Some red-headed fellow killed them," said the witness. ."Were they sent to the market?" "Yes." The witness declared that on one occasion oc-casion he. had seen as many as forty hogs killed at' the ranch and -.loaded Into a wagon for the market. Some of the pork, he said, was "red and spotted and thin and in an awful condition." con-dition." He said that he could not tell what was the cause of the spots. - Some of the meat, he said, had bright red spots on It as large as a person's hand, while some of the spots extended the whole length of the body. Before the hogs were killed, Harris said, he saw them in their pens, but was uncer. tain whether they were sick. The witness wit-ness declared that ot his own knowledge knowl-edge he could not tell whether the hogs were Infected with disease. ' but declared de-clared that something was wrong with them. The ranch was maintained on the Harris estate and Barton and Herbert were Harris' tenants. He asserted that on several occasions he told the defendants de-fendants to clean up the place, as It was In a deplorable condition. He averred that carbolic acid and disinfectants disin-fectants were used by the defendant, and that they declared that they werp "doping" the hogs. The case was resumed again at , 2 o'clock today. |
