Prices at the opening of the stock market today to-day pursued a downward course In the first dealings of the week, and stocks were freely offered in all quar-. ters. A sprinkling of small gains on first prices was poorly held. Anaconda Ana-conda sold off 3 points, Virginia-Carolina chemical prefei'red 1 and Atchison Atchi-son and Smelting large fractions. Rapid changes in the '. market's course occurred in the first hour In a large volume of business. The movement move-ment of Reading was illustrative of the general market, but the range In most other stocks was not so wide. Reading, after dropping 14 to 129. rebounded to 110. and was . then driven down to 128, By 11 o'clock it was back to 130.' .The general market was also at the top again. The principal advances were Atlantic Coast Line 2, D. & R. O. 2. Union Pacific and Great Northern preferred 1, Northwestern 1M, and I & N., American Car and Pressed Steel Car 1. The declines included IV, in Illinois Illi-nois Central, 1M in New York Central Cen-tral and Smelting, and 1 in Kansas Southern preferred, St. Louis South-City South-City Southern .' preferred, St. - Louis Southwestern ; preferred, Lead and United States Realty. . ' . Support became effective and some points of strength developed. The movement was generally narrow and the strength was Irregular. Consolidated Consoli-dated Gas moved up 6, Great Northern, North-ern, preferred 3, Northwestern 3, Reading- and Anaconda -2.U. P. 1 and St. Paul, Missouri Pacific, Atchison, Atchi-son, B.. & O.. Amalgamated Copper, Locomotive and 'Colorado Fuel 1. Iowa Central preferred receded 3 H, Pullman 2, People's Gas 1, Toledo, St. Louis Western preferred ltt. and Colorado & Southern second preferred pre-ferred 1V4, Tennessee Coal 1. Prices receded again before noon, Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania showing evidence of pressure. . Bonds were heavy at noon. ' ' The persistent selling of Pennsylvania Pennsylva-nia eventually caused a general decline which wiped out a good proportion of the day's rise. Pennsylvania itself sold 1 below last week's closing, and Reading fell 2 points from the best. The latter stock led a rally around 2 o'clock. ; Renewed efforts' were' made to drive the short interest to cover in various va-rious stocks that have recently fluctuated fluc-tuated widely,, particularly Reading and B. & O. The buying, however, was of a spasmodic character and frequent fre-quent raises occurred.
