Show DID HONOR THEDEAD Annual Memorial Services, of the 1. 0. 0. F. Are Impressive and Pleasing; Graves of Dead Are Decorated. The annual memorial services of the I. O. O. F. were held at the hall on Market street yesterday afternoon. The programme was pleasing and impressive, im-pressive, and was carried out by members mem-bers of the different lodges of the city. The hall was beautifully decorated with flowers of many kinds. The meeting was presided over by F. -D. Ulmer. The music waa of a high order or-der and In keeping with the occasion. Secretary R. A. Conine read the proclamation authorizing the observance observ-ance of the day from the grand lodge. He also read the names of the nineteen nine-teen members of the Odd Fellows' order or-der who had died In Utah within the past year. The Rev. Mr. Helmlck read the opening prayer according to the ritual and later spoke at length, basing his remarks on Joshua iv.. 21, "What Mean These Stones?" The speaker referred to the fact that stoneB had been the means of retaining, presenting present-ing and preserving lessons In all ages, and in support of this claim he gave numerous striking Instances The first illustration was that of the Tower of Babel, built for safety and in defiance of God, and in its destruction tne lesson les-son of man's weakness had been taught The monument at Bunker hill, he said, perpetuated the lesson that liberty had been established. He also stated that Sunday, June .17, was the anniversary of the battle of Bunker Hill. Dr. Helmlck referred also to the monument at Gettysburg, which commemorated com-memorated the magnificent result of liberty maintained, and mentioned the great speech of Lincoln, made at that place. . - Stones as monuments, Dr. Helmlck said, were not always essential, but that they always served a purpose. When once erected, they always tell a story. He then . spoke of individual gravestones or monuments and closed by paying a tribute to the dead in whose memory the services were being be-ing held. After the close of the session mget of those present went ta the different cemeteries, where flowers were laid upon graves, but no further services were held. . .' . ; ' |
