Show CRISIS IN HUNGARY FAR FROM SETTLED VIENNA. Feb. 18. The Hungarian Cabinet crisis Is as far from settlement today as it was when Emperor Francis Joseph received Francis Kossuth In audience audi-ence on Sunday. Since then a series of conferences have taken place at Buda Pest between the leaders of the various Hungarian parties, who are looking validly valid-ly for a solution of the problem. Furthermore, Fur-thermore, the Emperor has received in audience here two prominent Hungarian Liberal leaders, with no known rtult. Neither the Emperor nor the Independents Independ-ents are ready to yield on what each regards re-gards as vital points of policy. One of the principal Independent de. mands, which the Emperor will not consider, con-sider, is the formation of a separate Hungarian Hun-garian army, in which Hungarian will be the language of command. Despite the fact that the Emperor's recognition of the Independents today would result In fulfilling the party'a desires probably for many . years to come, the Emperor remains re-mains most reluctant to recognise in any way whatever the party' extreme military mili-tary demands, which he declares are impossible. im-possible. The Emperor and Parliament being unable un-able to reach an agreement concerning the new Parliament, there has grown up a movement for the formation of a neutral- Cabinet without political Influence, for the purpose of permitting legislation In the case of certain necessary matters of state, such as the recrnlting bill. etc. At present the Liberal party In Hungary Is trying to win over fifty to sixty delegates dele-gates to form a majority and support the Auegleich programme of 1167, and there is reason to believe that the Emperor favors fa-vors this effort. The Independents, although al-though they realise the Impossibility of carrying out at once the .ultimate purpose Of their far-reaching programme, namely, the political dissolution of the union of the two countries, are trying to win over an equal number, for the support of their present projects. |
