Show INVESTIGATION OF THE INSURANCE COMPANIES RESUMED AT NEW YORK NEW ' YORK, Sept 27. Upon the convening; today of the special legislative legisla-tive committee Investigating the life Insurance In-surance companies. Chairman Armstrong Arm-strong announced that owing to the serious illness of S. Fred TfUon. Speaker Speak-er of the Assembly, the committee met under distressing circumstances. "From information at hand," Senator Armstrong said, "It Is feared he can not recover, and In the event of his death the committee will Instantly adjourn." ad-journ." It was announced prior to the proceedings pro-ceedings of the Investigation that Jacob H. Schiff. head of the firm of Kuhn. Loeb A Ob., bankers, has been subpoenaed sub-poenaed and will take the stand for examination ex-amination either today or tomorrow. The first witness today was George C. Van Tuyl. Jr.. secretary and treasurer of the Albany Trust company, who produced pro-duced a .transcript, of the account of Andrew Hamilton opened February 21, 1905.' He stated that neither the bank nor he had knowledge of the purpose for which checks were paid in or out on that account. Mr. Van Tuyl was excused and Henry Rogers Winthrop, assistant secretary of the Equitable Life Assurance society, resumed his testimony as to the syndicate syndi-cate transactions of his company. Mr. Winthrop said that in the syndicate organised or-ganised to take . the bonds issued on the reorganization of the Union Pacific RailroaS company, the Equitable society so-ciety was allotted $750,000 of the bonds and the profits the society received from this transaction were 3750 shares of Union Pacific preferred stock. |
