Show MAINTAINS STATE HAS NO RIGHT TO EXAMINE WHEELING, W. Vs., -April 5. To evade being taken to Charleston to testify tes-tify in the investigation of charges against former Gov. .White, United States District Attorney Reese Billiard Bill-iard secured a writ of. habeas corpus from Judge Dayton for himself and State Senator Charles T. Caldwell of Parkersburg. A temporary writ was granted until Judge Go ft could' act, which may be a year hence. Blizsard in his argument to the court denied the authority of the committee to Investigate Mr. White as a State officer, of-ficer, as he ceased to. be Governor, and said he had no Jurisdiction, as the Legislature Leg-islature had adjourned sine die. Former Gov. White was charged by Senator Caldwell with sharing fees of Secretary of State Dawson. . |
