Show GHOST RWEflST DOWNED BY MlftMTS; RED-HOT RESOLUTION PREPARED A ghost that threatened to walk at the Democratic feast last night was laid by a well conceived and executed plan of stampeding the guests as soon as the set programme was concluded. '. v. The "ghost" was in the form of a resolution which if understood to have emanated - from high Democratic sources and which 'would undoubtedly have caused a storm had it been offered. of-fered. ' : To prevent ita being read, the pro-, gramme .was strung out until nearly time for the last car, and then, as thoilgh by a concerted movement,-"America" movement,-"America" was struck up and the guests departed without the formality of a parting speech by the toastmaster. .. A copy of the resolution came by accident ac-cident into the hands of The Telegram and here it is: The representatives-of 'the Bait Lake Democracy here assembled having concern con-cern for the future credit of the people ot Utah aad knowing full well the truth of which they speak. .HEREBY DECLARE: That notwithstanding the constant denials de-nials and persistent protestations to' the contrary by the recognized authorities ot i tho dominant church, "we hold these truths to be self-evident." that ever since the disbanding of the old ' JUboral" and "People's" parti,-nd the so-called division di-vision on party lines.' no single election lias been held in this State, the resnlt of wlitob could have been forecast with the Htp-fc te tpMil J ooure r"t jfenciracy, , 'Tltl'wiiei&.:ac tue4ait inomut as on toe ev of the late municipal election the ' kgic of events and the high personal merit of the candidates, supported - by considerations of profound public concern, con-cern, seemed te assure the election of the candidates of a particular party.- timely intervention of some . subtle, occult force naj ever arisen and exercised Its baneful control over an otherwise free ballot, for its own political purposes. That, since.-the admission of Utah Into the Union, and with increasing boldness every succeeding year, the authorities of this dominant church have sought (either by direct counsel, or by the hidden, devious, de-vious, cunning and subtle methods which perrote their system. an1 for which It In widely and Justly celebrated) to control, direct and deliver the majority vote in ail elections, local and general, so as to destroy de-stroy the freedom ot ballot which is. and always has been, the foundation of our liberties. It is idle to ran at conditions that will not be cured. Political events controlled by such agencies cannot be overcome by argument or reason: Why. then, should busy men leave their desks or workshops to engage in contests that never yield to the potency of truthful logic, but are predetermined pre-determined by this undiscoverable, though ever-present, influence? Let fawning sycophants sy-cophants continueu to polish with their bared bellies the doorsteps of him who is supposed to dispense this made force, and beg, or barter their souls for the transient crumbs that, perchance, may fall from ecclesiastical hands.- but let free and Independent Democrats now, and here, by these presents, '.-mphatlcally denounce de-nounce all such pernicious practices. ; WHEREFORE. WE RESOLVE. That, urtll there shall ceaee to be In this State any assumption on the part of any church or ecclesiastical authority, lndlvilua.1, or collective, of the right to counsel, advise, direct or command any individual voter, as to how, when.1-or for whom-he shall vote, i either- at prim!!,-- conventions, elections, or in the exercise of his duties as an office-holder; and -im til there shall be universal in Utah, sufficient evldsnoa of the existence of the free ballot the founders of the Republic gave, and of the complete divorce of church and state, obtained ob-tained i by centuries ef bloodshed; WB WILL (WHILE MAINTAINING OUR PARTY ORGANIZATION FOR NATIONAL- PURPOSES) REFRAIN FROM ALL PARTICIPATION IN LOCAL OR 8TATH POLITICS UNDER THE NAME OF-DEMOCRACT. OF-DEMOCRACT. AND WILL JOIN OUR FELLOW-CITIZENS ' OF EVERT POLITICAL PO-LITICAL BELIEF. AND- BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That we earnestly urge our friends and neighbors of the Republican party to seriously seri-ously and promptly consider the wisdom of like action, that an honest, industrious and God-fearing people may possess and enjoy the Just fruits of an untrammeled noHtVal snd Industrial lnriTnrience. |
