Show AUSTRALIA GREAT FIELD F THE MANUFACTURER W. Charles Crawford of Sydney in ihc City; Taking: a Long Trip to See a Friend W. Charles Crawford of Sydney. New J South Wales, Is a guest of the Kenyon. Mr. Crawford is a Californlan; he went to Sydney four years ago as representative representa-tive of a large electric belt concern In the United States and comes back to visit nla native heath. From here he goes on the New York, thence he goes to Austria to pay a visit to a dear friend whom he has not seen In five years. It Is for this purpose that he makes the trip, which, when completed, means 32,000 miles to see a loved face. "Australia Is a great country, albeit a peculiar one," he said. "We have years of drought and years of plenty. We have Just emerged from four years of drought and our meteorologists pre- diet nine years of fatness. - And such fatness! There Is nothing in this country coun-try to touch It. Why. aftef four years of arldness a two-inch- rain will cause grass to grow like a lawn.- The only drawback to Australia Is the-political unrest of the country. The socialist, or labor, element makes' and unmakes laws with such rapidity that capital is afraid to make large Investments. But that will be a thing of the past, In my opinion. Recuperation. "Now, as to recuperation. In 1896 New South Wales, a single State, had 63,000,000 sheep. Drought reduced the number to 23,000,000 In 1903. Since then we have had good range and the fecundity fecun-dity of the sheep and other surroundings surround-ings have Increased the number in two years to 43,000.000, or nearly 100 per cent. Australia's wool clip this year was $101,000,000, a pretty close second to the entire gold output of the world. Strange to say. most of this wool is shipped to England for manufacture; there Is one big manufactory in New South Wales and a couple of smaller concerns elsewhere. "The population during the past three years has been at a standstill; this is partly due to the ebbing of emigration emi-gration and partly to the failure of the population already there- to fill the cradles. Three Political Parties. "There are three political partiee, the Opposition, the Government and the Labor party. The Labor party rules whether it is in or the Government la in. . In fact, it does better with the Government party in the saddle, as it can dictate the policy of the latter. As a consequence, labor keeps capital unsettled. un-settled. When the party is able to control con-trol itself, there will be a great uprising upris-ing of mammoth Industries In Australia." Austra-lia." "We have the greatest waterworks proposition in the world; water brought from 400 miles northwest of Kalgoorlle to that place, which was in a desert waste In comparison with which the arid land between here and the western west-ern State line of the Sagebrush State is an oasis. "Australia offers great inducements to Americans with special Industries to establish, as candy manufacture, pork packing, and the like. Australia is an importing state and Is very favorably disposed toward American manufacturers. manufactur-ers. It Is a great country." |
