Show STATEHOOD BILL DOOMED TO DEATH WASHINGTON. D. C. Feb. 2L-As the session draws to a close there remains no doubt as to the fata of the Statehood bill. There may be a conferenoe committee commit-tee appointed, and this committee may agree with the House conferees on some measure, likely, the original House bill, but the Democrats In the Senate have riven notice in no- uncertain way of their disposition to talk the bill to death If need be, and no one on the Republican side has the temerity to jeopardise important im-portant legislative bills in an effort to force a vote. Delegate Rodey of New Mexico has given up all hope of a bill. He realizes the Impossibility of getting single Statehood State-hood with Speaker Cannon ex unalterably j opposed, and now that the Democrats have indicated a purpose to filibuster he sees his hopes for any kind of Statehood gone glimmering. The Swayne case still engages most of the time of the Senate these days. The Senators are heartily tired of the whole proceedings, and many claim that Judge Swayne should not have been Impeached. The outcome of the trial has never been doubted. Judge Swayne. according to the oracles, will pe cleared by a majority vote. Senator Reams will be the guest of honor at a dinner to be given Saturday next by William Loeb, Jr., secretary to the President. |
