Show INDIAN CHIEF MAY BE ELECTED SENATOR. The possibility of an Indian occupying a seat in the United States Senate has become almost a probability, contingent on the admission of Indian Territory and Oklahoma as one State. A peculiar brand of polities in which the noble red man and the negro will be the dominating domi-nating powers is also predicted by those familiar with conditions in .the woald-be Sfate. , , . By .an act of Congress the tribal relations will close on the 4th ! of .next March and. the Indians will become voters under the flag. r -iThey will for the first' time be allowed the privilege Of paying taxes, f one which they hare never enjoyed before. And for the first time in ' the history of the Nation an Indian may stand in Congress, elected to . f ' represent his people. ji . There' will be two ends to the new State and a Senator from each i Mid. There will doubtless be numerous candidates for office, as there a are in new States. The prediction is made that the one figure y 'f( United States Senator from the Indian Territory end of the new j iiate is Gen. Pleasant Porter, chief of the Creek nation. Gen. Por-f Por-f ler is a Democrat and the new State will be Democratic. As there j ; are 6000 negro voters in Indian Territory, the control of this army of colored voters will decide the destiny Of any political question. ( J ., ., The majority of the negro voters are nominally Republican, but V they are members of the Creek tribe, and they have a sincere regard -i 1 for their chief. Gen. Porter is probably the only Democrat who could t' ' command the entire negro vote of Indian Territory, as well as the ; Democratic white and Indian vote. Gen. Porter is not a stranger in Washington, but as a United States Senator he would occupy a position at once unique and spectacular. spec-tacular. He is a man of considerable wealth , and has reached the . age of 65. It would probably satisfy his pride in a large measure if he could be elected as Senator to represent hit people. It is declared that the people of Indian Territory take Gen. Por tef seriously as a Senatorial candidate. They do not see how he could ' :'be.beaten on a strong Democratic ticket |
