Show MERCURY : WAS DOWN Government Thermometer Went to 4 Below Sunday Sun-day Morning. When "Doc" Hyatt's corn began giving giv-ing him twinges of pain Saturday morning the we&ther man promptly sent out bulletins' of a cold wave, and the corn was right. Cold waves have been promised by the many complicated compli-cated instruments In the northwest corner cor-ner of the top floor of the Dooly building build-ing and also by the apparatus on the roof, but they failed to materialize', even though promised faithfully by "Doc." But that corn Is infallible, and the cold wave arrived on schedule. Sunday morning when the head of the house rose to light the kitchen fire he froze his feet on the linoleum in the kitchen and had to go back to bed to get them warm on his wife. Then he remained comfortably covered up until breakfast was announced. At 7 o'clock Sunday morning the Government thermometer registered 4 degrees below zero, the coldest morning morn-ing of the year for Salt Lake. Other thermometers, not so dignified as those in the service of the United States and "Doc," showed 6 and some few 7 below, and it is believed that had the dignity of the Government instrument allowed, it would have fallen as low as the common com-mon herd. The sun came out and valiantly tried to combat the cold, but it was a weak attempt and the best it could do was to raise the mercury from Jn fallen state to a position t2 degrees above the zero mark, about 2 o'clock. ay 4 o ciock even the Government instrument was falling from its high estate again and it kept on the downward path until 7 o'clock Monday morning when it registered regis-tered 1 degree below the zero mark. The cold came as a source of Joy to the coal dealers, although not to the teamsters who were hauled from their beds early by messengers and forced to haul fuel to many people. All day Sunday Sun-day wagons were busy and many tons of coal were delivered to homes and business houses. In spite of the fact that Salt Lake shivered and pitied itself as It hURged the stoves and radiators, it was not the only cold spot on the map, and, in fact, was a summer resort compared to some other points in the country. Omaha came in with a report of 22 below zero, and Kansas City showed 20 below. Even down in Arkansas, and near the Gulf coasts the thermometer took a tumble to itself. Little Rock was but 6 degrees warmer than Salt Lake and at Montgomery. Ala., the thermometer showed 32 degrees, with two Inches of sleet to tangle up the street car system and telephone wires. Tuesday will show a continuation of the cold weather, although reports from Montana showed a rising thermometer. |
