Show REMARKS Made at the Utah StakeCottfarenco Provo Saturday April 17 ISOTby ELDER F M LYMAN I REPORTED BY ARTHUR WINTER While listening to the Bishops reports I was reminded of many of the peculiarities of this work The Buhcps ore lemporal well as spiritualmest And so are we all In this Church The Gospel of life and salvation imbraces every department of human life The general feeling in Ihe Christian old Is I that the religious part of our nature ihould be taken care of on the Sabbath I day and that nothing but the spiritual ii suitable in connection with the orhip ol I God But we as ministers of the Gospel are expected to lake part in temporal as well as spiritual matters world ThU For we are In a temporal temporal life we have to grapple with as well as the spiritual affairs ol life It is I important that we be fed and clothed Hence it in i necessary that we cultivate the earth and provide these necessities ol life We must not only take care ol our spirits and see that they have spiritual spirit-ual food but we must also take care of these temples of the Lord for we are III Ihe likeness of our Father who is inept heaven in the likeliest of His body and our tabernacles should 1 e kept sacred and pure as the I tabernacle of our Father We should be perfec as He Is perfect honoring Him and manifesting our gratitude to Him for the blessings and favors that He has bestowed upon us He has revealed to us the way or life We know how to live We know Ills commandments and we know how to keep them We are being Instructed day by day and He bestows upon us the Holy Spirit to be our constant companion com-panion We need not be left to ourselves our-selves and to the imaginations of our on hearls but we are entitled to the Spirit of the Lord to guide us In all our was These brethren here who are leaders among the people In spiritual fund In temporal affairs are entitled to the Inspiration of the Lord to guide Hum to restrain them from evil and to give them strength and courage to perform per-form the duties that devolve I upon them Ot It Is a very esl Important work that we are engaged InI the work of life and salvation and the labor to purify our own hearts and to bring into our own lives hit principle of repentance antl of reformation that will enable us to fe ourselves from the sins that so aftl ct human nalure All have their weaknesses weaknes-ses all are shnierit but the Spirit ol the Lord Is given to enable us to jnake our sins and to obtain favor with the Lord We were wonderlully favored ol the Lord when we heard the Gospel We Mere wonderfully layered of the Lord v hen we believed it for there are a treat many people who hear and yet do not believe It is a great misfortune 10 men arid women In this world who cannot can-not believe in God and In Jesus the Savior of the world who cannot put themselves in a conJillou to have their sins remitted and to receive the Holy I Ghost We have been favored with the gilt of faith and with the silt of repentance repent-ance We have received baptism for the remission of our sins In order that of these IS a may have tin full benefit principles of life and salvation It is important im-portant that we remain faithful It is not enough that we have heard that we have Believed that e have made profession pro-fession of repentance and been baptized for the remission of sing it h not enough that we have had hands laid upon up-on us for the gilt of the Holy Ghot but it is an unceasing labor on the Peat 01 men and women 10 so serve the Lord as to keep His Spirit The office of the Holy G host U to bring to our remembrance remem-brance whatever we have been taught Jl on J ptr I to give us understanding of the pat p-at to enable us to look Into the future and see things that are to come to appreciate ap-preciate today wbat there is just in front of us that we are likely to meet We have also the revelations given in olden times through the prophets of the Lord the word of God given by the Savior and His Apostles and the revelations given to us through the Prophet Joseph and his successor In addition to all this the Lord has established among us men bearing the same Priesthood and authority that the Apostles bore anciently ancient-ly and they are giving to us the woid of the Lord today suited to our requirements require-ments and conditions just as has oeen done whenever the rather has had a work on the earth When Moses was leading the children of Israel out of Egypt he received the word of the Lord da by day He had the mind and will of God given to him to guide Israel in their movements in their encampments in their worship of the Lord In their sacrifices etc bo in the days of the Savior we s the mind and will of the Father made known through the Son for tne direction of the disciples of the Lord Jells They were thoroughly instructed in regard to Ills doctrines They were taught how 16 approach the Tatner and how to servo Him Thed they were sent forth inspired of God to teach the Gospel to the whole world In this day as in former times the Lord has estabihed His authority among men the > e men that I have spoletn this morning bold a measure cf that authority and they have spoken as men who i ate closely I I connected with fI the people in regard to the matters that pertain per-tain to the r daily labors They have talked atout the temporal condition the peep c about the payments that are tbbour lne necessary In the building of meetinghouses t I meeting-houses and about the necessities of Ilia people But this tray sound to tome rather peculiar to be brought up In a house of worship Vh is toe any ling more sacred and important than the welfare of the people spiritual and temporal IN I it not Important that web we-b fed and clothed and educated Is I It not important that houses of education Should be built And are they built without money and labor Is It nit nectary that that poor bj cared for wound in the rcvclitloni I of the Lord I I that very much attention has hen civen by the rKanu in couneln UN mralliteins in retard IIt II to t providing lor ih t poor that they I slmll not suffer It 11 j very trious thing wilh had to fled them wh1I they wire hungry he hid I to provide them wilh 1 a er wnen they were thirsty and pulse mirac es were wrought in order to bring arout the temporal salvation ol Isratl Now we nerd some miracles wrought J tlsj that our wants may bees supplied and tint we may have house in which to orship as well as houses cn which to dwell and also tbat we may be able lo meet our ob igatious lor il wears we-ars not honorable in meeting our obligations obliga-tions to men how can we be honoraole with the Lord Is it less I be Lint We can defraud our neighbors and be honeM with the Lord No We mint be honest hon-est with one another We must eopecl illy be honest with ourse ves We must be upright just and exacting with ourselves our-selves and require ol ourselves to dO the will of the Lord and 1 to deal justly I 1U dih htl oIG2 and prooerly with the things of God financially and spintuallj for lIese things are all sacred and all sp ritual unto the Lord Anything that puiams to our bodily comfort and happiness is I sacred to the Lord If it were not so why need the Lord trouble about the poor going hungrj Let them starve year I only tne body that suffers Tnj spirit Is not starving Let the body go it is only a temporal affair That might be His feeling if He did not care about them But 113 body U the temple ol God and He regards it sacredly The body Is an essential part of us We cannot be like the Father unless we have a tabernacle It Is J most precious to us and is to become eternal This mortality that now suffers with sickness and disease and finally with dissolution Is to become immortal These bod es of ours are to be resurrected and we are to receive them again when they have put on Incorruption and immortality immortal-ity We are to enjoy them throughout Ihe future and never to part with them again A man is not a man without a body It u not possible for us tolattalit to the exaltation and glory that God tie signs to bestow upon us as His sons and daughters without these tabernacles Mm cannot be made perfect without a tabernacle no more than he call be made perfect without the woman Man alone it not perfect Man is not without the woman ill the Lord nor the woman without tnenun And the man and the woman are not perfect without their posteiity They must t be fullers and mothers they must have posterity and stand it their head in order to be perfect per-fect So that these bodies of ours forma form-a very important factor In our ptogres glass and advancmnt 10 become is our Father and Ills Son have become and the righteous who have gone before We must be wcr hy of these tabernacles we must be worthy of eternal 1 fe The Lord has so favored us for some reason which I may not be able to solve that we have been allowed to come upon up-on the eaith when the Gospel Is here and that coming at this time we have come In the path where the Gospel his found us We have heard the Gospel we have believed it and have entered into covenant with tne Lord and it wll I be woe to us II we do not prove faithful and keep the commandments of Godl It I would be very much better if we did not hear the truth than that we should hear and receive it and then turn our backs upon it We cannot afford to do this We have entered S3 far into covenant cove-nant with the field and undertaken to accomplish Ills purposes that we must not go back we must go forward ard labor diligently and faithfullLto brief to pass the purposes ol the Lord in our own salvation We are laboring for out selves Though we may go out into the world to pre ich t h Gospel though we may labor hard among the ponle ai public servants we are laboring for our ouu alvtlioii It Is a personal matter with ourselv ai well as matter cf general advantage for the people when welaber But first we are labjrnf for our uwn salvation And hen we are called responsible poutions among the people is necessary 10 rave ourselves our-selves mat we should labor for the salvation sal-vation of others Our slvatitll comes in the fact that we serve God and labr for the salvation 61 l our brethren It h the same with these Bishops here and with all those who are charged with the care of the churches their salvation lies in doing their duty whatever it may be If a man be called to go to Ihe nalicm of the earth to preach the Gospel 1m salvation lies in answer par to mat call 1 end performing that dutv faithfully Lee ing himself 1 unspotted from the J world and tree from corruption from Immorality laid from every evil Wear We-ar in the world to ba tried It is a world of trial and of proving It was delgned to be so The Lord designs alto that we shall serve Him I and kelp iH l eIJt Ills commandments I And we can di it if we will If we will ve may have faith and we may repent If we do not want to repent we need not We have never been compelled to repent r 1o Not a man cr woman in this house has ever been romp lied lo repent The thumbscrews have never been put upon us we have never been threatened or fiiljhttnjd into repentance We have simply been taught the plan of Ifs and alvation we have been persuaded have ben reasoned with and the Slrt of the Lord has endorsed sanctioned the reasoning and arguments ol those to whom we have listened and it has accompanied ac-companied our reading and we have been converted We are held lozetber by the irsoiration of the Lord We are I not bound together as securely as we ouznt to be and as wo might bell we were belittle t but the measure ol the Spill is with us just aeci rdlng to our devotion and 11 ithl IF Incas in serving God The
