Show Good for Acheson Secretary of State Stale Dean Acheson has been much criticized in this country for failures in the field of foreign policy policy- and with good reason But in all fairness fairness' the secretary must be credited with some substantial successes too too One of his major achievements was the handling of the Japanese peace treaty at San Francisco last fall Another was his recent work in diplomatic discussions discussions discus discus- in London in Paris and in Lisbon relative to the problem of Atlantic Pact defense progress Secretary Acheson made a radio- radio television report to the American people on those conferences last Friday in which he declared that the 14 nations allied together in m the North Atlantic Treaty Organization had made great strides toward strength and unity Mr 7 Acheson listed five major achievements as follows Agreement on the military forces to tobe tobe tobe be made available to General Eisenhower Eisenhower Eisenhower Eisen Eisen- hower in 1952 agreement on bases and facilities for those forces agreement on ona ona ona a Western Vestern European Defense army of six nations including Western Vestern Germany restoration of Western Vestern Germany to a place of equality and responsibility and strengthening of N NATO A T 0 through reorganization These do indeed represent substantial progress toward security for the western free world in general and for Western Vestern Europe in particular And we honestly believe Secretary Acheson deserves deserves deserves de de- de- de serves much of the credit for that achievement It is well that in recognizing the achievement and commending the Secretary Secretary Secretary Secre Secre- tary of State we inject a word of caution as Mr Acheson himself did The liThe days of danger are still with us he said And that is a postscript which must be appended to any analysis of the recent conferences and to any editorial of com corn We Ve have made real progress But we are not out of the woods We Ve cannot relax our vigilance or our effort The danger indeed is still with us |
