Show Good Scho School l News We Ve think not only the mothers of next falls fall's second grade students in Salt Lake City schools but all those who I believe in the cause of sound well well- rounded education n for our children willbe willbe will willbe be relieved at the decision of the Board of Education to have full-day full instruction in second grade next year instead of the threatened half-day half classes It will of course cost the taxpayers some more money The decision was made to cut the second grade to half halfday halfday halfday day in order to save enough money to give teachers a small salary increase Thanks to new legislation passed at the special session however the Salt Lake City school system can now levy an additional tax which will make it possible possible possible pos pos- sible to employ the 40 extra teachers required to make full day instruction in inthe inthe inthe the second grade possible It was only last year that Salt Lake City completed the changeover to the full year 12 school system replacing the year 11 system which has for years shorted Salt Lake City children on their education and to a very considerable extent handicapped them when they went on to college education It would be a deplorable step backward if now just after getting the standard year 12 system into operation we had to again limit educational advantage by cutting culling instruction in the important second grade in half It is encouraging news also to have h ve Dr M. M Lynn Bennion superintendent say that in addition to restoring full-day full instruction in the second grade it may maybe maybe maybe be possible to restore driver training which has proved so valuable and to lift some of the proposed textbook textbook fees No one likes tax increases but we think the great majority of property owners in Salt Lake City would rather pay higher taxes than see the educational educational educational program in our schools schools' seriously curtailed |
