| Show DISCOURSE Delivered at the General Conference of the Church of Joaui Christ i I Latterday Saints In the Tabernacle Salt Lake C Ity Sunday i I April 4lh 1897 by i PRESIDENT JOSEPH F SMITH I i RETORTED DY ARTHUR WINTER I I have been Invited by President George Q Cannon to occupy a portion 01 I l ihe lime this miming There are many things which deserve the attention ol the Elders and which might be Spin k tn upon during the Conference and wIII be probably toIhe edification 01 the Saints and In the Interest ol the advancement ad-vancement of the work of the Lord It Is very gratllyinc to hear the reporl which has been given tins morning by 1mident I Cannon concerning the labor of the Elder that are preaching the Gospel the nations ol the earth and especially to notice the one lending feature to which reference has been made namely the mode ol preaching the Gospel by the Elders In the United States and In some other parts of the world without purse and scrip The Idea has prevailed for some time past to a certain extent until a little while ago that it was necessary that the Elders should l in going out to preach the Gospel provide ihemstlves unh money In order that they mljl not Buffer Buf-fer lor the necessaries of life In consequence con-sequence oi the prevalence of this Idea for many Years past the Ciders generally have provided themselves with means us far as they could and then their kindred and friends and the various quorums 01 > the Seventies hate lurnshed them means to enable them to prosecute their missionary labors To Brother Elias S Kimball now presiding over the Southern States Mission Is due the credit perhaps as much or more than to I any of the Eldtn who ore presiding oxer missionary fields for remaugmat log the former practice of preaching the Gospel among the pople without purse or scrip It h praliljing to know that In the Southern Stales In the Northern States in the Eastern Stales and in the Calif rnla MUsions and upon the islands of th eaIII fact wherev r this practice Is I observed the work of the Lord is more pro peious if I possible than it Is anywhere else The heart of the people are reached their sympathy is aroused and they receive the Elders with greater kindness and administer to them more liberally than they were wont to do uhen the Elders were depending for their support upon the means In their on rocket I have always advocated the principle of preaching the Gopel I without purse or scrip I recollect mk nj tome remark on this subject sevFral years ago In this house wilen my words teemed to recoil on my own head for thy did not meet fill favor In the course of my renaiks a t that lime I advanced Ih e Idea that those men who posss ed wea h whose cons were called 1 out Into the mi s orury long as they continue lo do their duty as members of the Church I have a son on a mbsiuntind I have advised ad-vised him to put his trust in the Lord and as far as possiole exert an influence with his associates to do the same and not to depend upon me for mn hot to depend pan the Lord allll I the people among whom he labors I would advise all those who have sons out In the world preaching the Gospel to exhort them not to put lscir I trust in money but rather In the Lord and thereby prove the world and labor wholly and solely for the salvation of men hating that thought uppermost In their minds and not me thought that they have been sent I have out labored into tire In I world Lugland to fee nl the missions si this and my experience while abroad proved to me that among he mot useless nil S slcnarles sent out into the field were those who depended upon the means in thtlr pockets far their support They did D t feel humble they did not seem to put their trust in the Lord they did not seek unto Him earnestly and d h l gently to obtain His Spirit they did nit feel in their hearts that Irgd desire I for the salvation of the children of men that those did who were holy dependent 11 depend-ent upon the Lord I attribute tie improvement im-provement that is observed in the various missionary fields to the spirit that has I been awakened in the minds ol the I Elders to put their trust In the Lord and to rely upon ills kindness and providence provi-dence while they are in the world VII A have heard words of cii Icism amountIng t amount-Ing almost to censure of the rigid way f Inwhch Brother Ellas S Kimball Iud required Elders to put their I I money away and I to put their trust in the Lord n I have riot felt to eodor t < lat Senior rill for I have believed it was right I words from Ihe liook of Doctrine and Covenant The Lord in a revela done says There are In the church two Priesthood namely the Melchlsedek and Aarcnlc Including In-cluding the LevlUcal priesthood Why the first U I called tile Melchlsedek Priesthood Is I because Melchlsedelc was such a gre t I light Inesl Before his day It was called the I rely Priesthood Priest-hood after the order of the Son of when the First Presidency render a decision on which they are agreed I the Twelve Aposiles can rise up and render another decision on which they are united and their decision be equai with that of the First i Pre idency era would reult lit confusion and j would be destructive of the org nlziciircn or f the Church Nor can the Seven les rise up while the 1residen and Twelve live and render n decision Because the promise hlf these things abound In them they shall not be unfruitful In the know ledge of the Lord I And In case that any decision of these qua rum is I made in unrighteousness it may be
