Just off the Lark road before you get to the railroad rail-road tracks. The Turkey and chicken shoot f Sunday has interest at high pitch, as the local marksmen an- ticipate that fat juicy turkey with stuffin' for Thanksgiving din-, net. With a dozen or so choice j birds as prizes, the shoot officials offic-ials anticipate a great number of participants, so you fellows who are not working Sunday please try to get your shots in early. Remember, furnish your own gun and ammunition. Any 22 caliber rifle without peep or telescope sights may be used. Range will be 50 yards, and shots must be made from standing po-: po-: sition. Shooting, will start at 10 a.m. Sunday and will continue all day. All members are invited j to come and try for one of these 1 fine prizes, i DON'T BELIEVE IT Some years ago a group of i sportsmen met to determine the j shootin' ability of its members j as well as to establish once and 1 for all the supremacy of the town's two best shots. As the day I wore on, with many heated arguments ar-guments and only a few casual-1 casual-1 ties, the field narrowed down to ' just the two finalists who had j each won an equal number of j points as they clearly outshot : the other members. For the final j shots to determine the champion, ! the targets were moved back 50 yards and the boys were to have three shots apiece at separate targets. Jake, the first shooter, I grinned triumphantly as he plunked his three shots so close together in the bulls-eye, you could see only one hole. But cheers from Bill's side soon after, af-ter, proved their champ had done as well with all three shots in the black. Excitement now was at fever pitch as the two sides exchanged bets, bottles and now and then a well aimed kick or blow at their rabid opponents. Again the targets were moved back, and again the judges could only proclaim pro-claim a draw on the score. As the targets kept moving back and the shot pattern getting a little wider each time, the crowd knew the tenseness was bound to break the aim of one of the men soon. Sure enough, just before be-fore dark the two boys who had been relaying the targets on their fastest ponies, rode up to the judges with the targets and everyone ev-eryone knew by their expressions expres-sions that one of the men had missed. It took several hours of intense study for the judges to make a decision, because those last two targets never had a hole any place in 'em. Being one of the judges and respecting the wrath and shootin' eyes of Bill's followers, I announced Jake the winner, only after arriving safe- ly in the next state. You see it was mighty hard to find Bill's third shot. The targets were so far away on the last round, that the spent bullets just wouldn't penetrate that tough cardboard, ! and it was pretty tough to find the dent in the white. Tournament time for the bowling bowl-ing fraternity is rollvg around and the local keglers are working work-ing overtime to develop that extra something needed to top the field in this great competi- tive sport. In the state match play tour-; tour-; ney Ray Cromar, team man on the BDAA squad in the Salt Lake Major league, looms as the new state champ. Ray, considered one of Utah's finest keglers, is at ' present far in the lead as the match play goes into the final ; round this week-end at the Ritz ! alleys. The BDAA "Travellers" in the ; Major league split a thrilling ; series with league leading Mul-i Mul-i lett-Kelly crew last week, and I lost totals by only one pin. The Binghamettes finally be-, be-, came victims of the law of averages aver-ages and dropped a 3 to 1 decision, decis-ion, but kept well out front in the hectic Ritz ladies' league. At the Southeast drives, the Bingham boys ran into a bad , night that allowed only George Abplanalp to get a decent series and caused the locals to drop 3 j of 4 to Scott Investment. |
