Show MISSA Music Lovers Receive V Rare Treat at Concert By ROY HUDSON Displaying emotions as sincere and 2nd preparation as painstaking as the master wio wrote the work a lI voice chorus combined with the Utah Symphony to present Beethoven's Missa Friday Friday Friday Fri Fri- day night in I Kingsbury hall hail and give Salt L Lake ke music lovers loyers a rare i Christmastide treat From the resounding crescendos of the Gloria through the softer passages of the Credo and Sanctus Maurice J Abravanel conducted the soloists orchestra and chorus through nearly two hours of glorious glorious glori glori- ous mis music from the pen of one of the worlds world's masters The performance of Missa issa Sol- Sol by the combined orchestra and choral groups coming as it did after a brilliant performance of the deaf masters master's Ninth Symphony Symphony Symphony Sym Sym- phony last y year e a 8 r entrenched Beethoven as a 8 favorite in this area and insured community support support support sup sup- port for future presentations of works of ot this type Great Portion Probably the outstanding portion portion portion por por- tion of ot the evenings evening's performance was the Credo third part of ot the mass in concert form This vocal ocal assertion of a creed not only was sas a solemn and sincere declaration of a faith but was also a tender loving and yet sorrowing sorrowing sor sor- rowing owing recital of the birth and crucifixion of Christ From the mourning theme of th the crucifixion through a scornful passage suffered suf under Pontius Pilate the music then rose to a joyous height in fri telling of His ascension and glorification The difficult vocal solos were well ell handled by Blanche M M. Christensen Christensen Chris- Chris soprano Rachel Connors Connor alto Walter Valter Richardson tenor and Harold H. H Bennett bass but it was the evident enthusiasm and sincerity of the University of Utah combined choruses which stood out out throughout the performance Soloists Shine The four soloists showed to best advantage in the fourth and fifth sections of the work the Sanctus and Agnus Dei Del where several more prolonged solo passages gave an attentive audience a better chance to hear them in duet and quartet arrangements A bright spot in the Sanctus was as a violin solo by Leonard Pos- Pos ner ncr concertmaster of ot the sym sym- phony Much credit should go to the directors of the various university groups the groups the Ladies' Ladies Glee Gle club mixed chorus and Mens Men's Glee club who who rehearsed their vocalists Inthe in int inthe t the e difficult work and to LeRoy J J. J Robertson head of the university university sity music department who took the carefully drilled groups welded them into a fine musical instrument instrument instrument ment and then turned it over to Mr Abravanel for final rehearsals with the orchestra Work ork Revealed Although it was the chorus which took the spotlight the orchestra orchestra or or- chestra under Mr Abravanel's sympathetic direction added much to the performance while solo Bolo organ p pas passes a s s e s by Alexander Schreiner helped set up imaginary scene of a choir singing in a stately church The work itself showed the painstaking work of the composer who labored for four and a half halt years be before delivering the finished product to his patron the Archduke Archduke Archduke Arch- Arch duke Rudolph three years after the particular event for which It was composed Dedicated to the archduke the mass was commissioned in the fall of 1818 1318 and was to have been performed at the installation of the archduke as archbishop of on March 20 1820 It was not completed until Feb 27 1823 however and the fi final al revised copy was not turned over to Beethoven's patron and student until March larch 19 1823 A- A second performance of the Ole mass will be given Sunday at pm p.m. in Kingsbury hall for university university university uni uni- students |
