Show Now the Fishs Fish's Goose Is Cooked Snow slide in Provo Prove Canyon C nyon Scalds Trout Its It's a Fact I By Bill BUI Coltrin When a In Provo canyon causes fish to be scalded it it Is time to admit that everything that could go wrong with the Provo river has gone wrong Its It's a fact that tact that last week did cause cause- some fish lish to die peca because e the water became too hot Here is how it happened and Marion Madsen fisheries chief for the state fish and game department department depart depart- ment is the authority for the yarn When the slide hit the e river naturally it dammed the stream However the steam plant of ot the Utah Power Light Co at the mouth of the canyon had to keep operating The warm water from this steam plant is turned back into the Provo river Normally this thia doesn't hurt anything b be be- cause cauze the water coming down the canyon Is very cold and it cools of off the hot water quickly However with the river dammed the cold water was reduced d to Just a trickle Then the warm water from the power plant he heated t d the river water for a mile or so down through and the fish just couldn't take it Fish and game department workers tried t to save sonic some le BOl fish by putting them in tanks but the quick change in temperature made this effort futile The loss wasn't too great Madsen said but with everything else that has happened to the 3 vo river this year scalding was fish the crowning blow Incident Incidentally lly Madsen said that the slide sUde itself didn't do much damage since It occurred at the stretch of the river where fishing normally is is not too good I t S 1 |
