OPINIONS ELSEWHERE The Se Sex Psychopath Menace Again this month several vera men have been arrested In Milwaukee county for attacks on on women and girls I Some of them have hav been sent to prison for considerable terms Others have been d dealt with more leniently I N Not one however has been handled a as the sick person he may be or be-or or as 8 the menace he ho constitutes s. s 4 Under a Wis Wisconsin 1 law passed by the 1947 9 7 legislature r such a person is declared to be a sex psychopath subject to segre segre- gation In an an appropriate institution until cured or kept for or life life if cure cannot be effected That law so so far has not been used be because because because be- be cause Mi Milwaukee wauk e county which h 1 If is given re responsibility responsibility re- re for creating a proper place for segregation and treatment has not vided vide suitable quarters It is in fact m making making mak mak- king k- k ing no iJ immediate effort to set up the ho required re- re Squired facilities I. I Now NoYl while the county delays more and more of these sex psychopaths are are being pl picked ked up and nd bein being sen sent away for ter terms I which will one day end whether the has been removed In a few months or at years they will all be back with us many of them g greater cater menaces than ever to womanhood a and d young boys How long must we wo wait watt for proper roper facilities to make sure sura that such men are not released until there is some Bome assurance that they will wll never again attack women or lead youngsters astray It can be admitted that this work of ot segregating sex psychopaths should have been undertaken by the state rather than forced on l- l Milwaukee county It can be admitted admitted ad ad- too that there is at present no known cure for many of the sex deviates But the problem will not wait for the 1949 session of the legislature and there will never be a treatment technique unless somebody somebody some somebody body do does the tho Initial work of development Milwaukee Journal
