Making It Truly a Utah Monument The Utah pioneer monument committee has launched a wide state-wide campaign to raise to help pay for the imposing imposing imposing ing structure scheduled to be built at the mouth of Emigration canyon Site chosen for the monument expected ted to be one of the largest and finest in the nation is on a height of land overlooking overlooking overlooking over over- looking Salt Lake valley marking the spot where Brigham Young on July 24 1847 made his famous statement This is the place The 1945 legislature appropriated to be matched by the sum which will be raised by popular subscription Designs Designs Designs De De- signs and models for the monument have been prepared by Mahonri Young nationally known sculptor who is a grandson of Brigham Young It is planned to have the monument completed completed completed com com- for Utah's centennial year with the dedication ceremony slated for July 24 1947 The monument will tell the whole story of pioneer exploration exploration exploration tion and colonization of Utah including the visit of th the party of Fathers Escalante and Dominguez guez Spanish explorers the early day explorations and activities of trappers and traders and the migration of the Mormons in hi 1847 an f succeeding years ears It will be truly a Utah monument and it is appropriate therefore that the people of Utah in its ing It is to be hoped that the being sought through popular subscription will come from many thousands of rather than from just a few large donors Children should be encouraged to give their nickels and dimes not so much for the sake of the money which might thus be raised but so that in later years as they visit this imposing monument they will feel that it is their monument It would be a fine thing if every Utahn could contribute something to this project no matter how small the contribution might be That would make it in fact a Utah monument inspired inspired inspired in in- by Q hns designed and built by and paid for both directly and indirectly by U
