V Bunderson of Emery Utah a fighter pilot with the Thirteenth air force recently made a successful belly landing at ata a Solomon island base despite wounds which temporarily blinded him and rendered his left arm useless He was attacked by five Zeros while hile protecting a crippled Flying Fortress A bullet struck his left forearm and another shattered his planes plane's canopy lacerating his face ace Weakened by his injury and barely barely barely bare bare- ly able to see because of the blood splattering into his eyes and across his windshield he headed home with the Japs pursuing him for 50 miles Unable to get his landing gear down he held his knee against the control stick to maintain a level flight and successfully made madea a belly landing
