O Meals Jane Wetzel and Miss Patricia Hardy They're taking the week 16 course to prepare themselves for drafting jobs left open by men who are called into the armed forces Women Sign Up for Drafting Class Editors Editor's note The article below is is the first of a series planned by The Salt Lake Telegram women's women's women's wom wom- ens en's department dealing with women who are replacing men in in industries professions and other essential jobs in Salt Lake City The articles will show how women women wom- wom en are being prepared to replace men who are leaving for the armed forces and their enthusiasm over being able to do their part in the war effort By BETTY BErry WAUGH The lights are ablaze in the civil engineering department of the University of Utah school of engineering these nights nights nights- as evening defense classes boom in popularity and not only men but women sign up to take j them One of the most popular courses being given is the drafting drafting drafting draft draft- ing class held every Monday Wednesday and Friday from 7 to 10 p p. p m m. for 16 weeks which will qualify graduates for drafting drafting drafting draft draft- ing jobs in essential industries And the way women are c crowd r row o w d ding ing the classroom is enough to convince anyone that they they're re ready and willing to take over mens men's jobs to enable them to enter the armed forces Two attractive young women who are enrolled in the course which is taught by M M. S S. S Kesler civil engineering department instructor instructor instructor in in- in- in are Mrs E E. O O. Meals wife of Major Meals who is on active duty with the army air forces and Miss Patricia Hardy Both want to become war workers work work- ers ers Mrs Mrs Meals the former Miss Jane Wetzel because she wants to do do my bit just as my husband is doing and Miss Hardy because she will be placed in a drafting department of a large downtown business f firm rm upon completion of the course Women are proving they can cando cando cando do a good job of drafting Mr Kesler said We have no trouble placing them and they seem to enjoy the work Among those taking the class are Mr and Mrs Clyde T T. Bromley 73 H street who are both interested in drafting jobs Mr Kesler r reports ports that there are more students enrolled in evening defense classes which are sponsored government-sponsored than there are in the entire engineering engineering engineer engineer- ing school which proves their popularity Three requirements of the class are that you must be a citizen of the United States a high school graduate and not an enrollee at the time in any university 4 |
