Bounds With With BILL COLTRIN COLTRIN- Few citizens d 41 draw r raw a w any more criticism than the weather man but ut this la last t long week end proves that hat the gent is not an unmitigated cad ad I I It can be freely estimated that no less than sports sports' lovers of Utah would now vote ote for forthe forthe forthe the weather man should he desire desire de de- de- de sire to run for something besides besides besides be be- sides his Il life e although for a time last week It appeared certain certain tain lain that the conditions would be bad for sportsmen Things could have been bad for high ligh school and college grid games gaines and for various celebrations and andersons andersons persons would have stood it stoically stoically stoic- stoic ally illy but if it had been wet forthe for I Ithe the he pheasant hunters the weather weatherman man would have been the m most st cursed individual in the state As it was Sunday marked the best opening day for at lea least t three years ears and the days following were enough to cause any bird hunter joy oy Cant Can't Shoot Straight We hunted south of Provo with Dutch Adams and Bob Snell of Provo and the boss John Mooney And if that party didn't fill up which it didn't it was not because because because be be- cause the phea pheasants ants weren't there or couldn't be flushed but because the guns weren't pointing straight C ICe C While hiIe we were meandering around the country watching for fora a pheasant it occurred to us that if anyone must be called a sportsman during pheasant season it would be much more apt to hang the title on the longsuffering longsuffering longsuffering long- long suffering farmers of the state Although we were rather proud Sunday of our brethren in the hunting fraternity watching not only our own party but many other hunters attempting to negotiate negotiate ne ne- ne- ne fences without damaging them refraining from building fires a and a d obeying no hunting signs we feel that the patient farmers of the state should have a public acknowledgment of their kindness Now it Is doubtful if farmers really appreciate having a thousand thousand thousand thou thou- sand or so gu guys s 's climbing fences all day long no matter how carefully it is done But in all allbut allbut allbut but a few spots not a word of protest has come from the land owners So rig right h t now well we'll say and wager more than a farthing w we echo sentiments of many others that the farmers of Utah are a aswell aswell aswell swell bunch of people for letting us use we their property for our sport Shell Shortage Benefits It is just possible that the shell shel shortage saved a lot of birds from picking up some shot this year year year- shot that wounds but does no not kill immediately In other years when plenty of shells could b be had everyone kept shooting at a flushed pheasant until it was wa ou out of sight We noticed this year that hunters hunters hunt hunt- ers ens were more cautious about tryIng trying try try- ing impossible shots shots unquestionably ably a result of lack of shells Many times we have seen birds bird hit on long shots and although not killed outright it is very possible possible possible pos pos- sible that they died later Probably a few h hens hen e a s were saved this year ear also While Thile we can think of few things less sportsmanlike we h have a v e seen guys shooting hen pheasants for Afraid just practice to carry arry a hen around because of the risibility r of ot running into a gal ie warden these chaps would just fire away and let the bird lay With shells as tough to purchase pur pun chase cha e as they are now the practicing practicing Is at a minimum C C CIn In the counties where the season will continue for a few days longer the hunting will be tough tough tough-espe- espe especially for those without a dog dog dog- but it will still be worth a trip I Ithe if the weather remains dry Th The birds have been In deep hiding since the first hour or so opening day but they are still around around- that much is a cinch We e always ahm's like lilee to dream of a place where for the entire seaon season season sea sea- son on birds could be flushed with ease that they are right at the opening moments the first day of the season that if it the shells held hel out we could get a limit then |
