| Show Its It's Not a Thankless Job SUGAR rationing has proved quite a headache headache headache head- head ache for those in charge of the program and for those thousands of good citizens the citizens the nations nation's school teachers who teachers who have cooperated with rationing boards in the mass sign It is easy to understand why it would be bea a headache In the first place this enrollment is the greatest single job ever undertaken in inthe inthe inthe the United States In four days practically every everyone one of Americas America's more than p people ople has to be signed up That in itself is a tremendous task In the second place the enrollment enrollment enrollment en- en is not just a simple matter o of registering registering registering regis regis- names Each individual must be identified iden idea i by name and address age height color of eyes and hair sex and relationship to the registrant A lot of that information has not been previously ascertained ed by careless registrants In the third place the registration tion calls for ascertaining the amount of sugar on hand in each home and determining how many stamps must be removed from ration books i 1 It is a a complicated process and it is easy to see how there should be some difficulties in carrying out the program And yet for all the complications rationing has proceeded rather well and the job will be finished on time Those in charge of the program and especially the volunteer helpers deserve praise and not censure The work being done without pay by the school teachers teachers s of the nation is particularly worthy of commendation It is no easy task they have been called upon to perform On top of regular school work they have worked l long ng hours often under trying conditions and subject to unwarranted and unreasonable abuse from inconsiderate registrants In Salt Lake City more than regular teachers in elementary schools substitutes junior and senior high school teachers school board clerks and some members of Teacher Parent-Teacher associations have performed this valuable and patriotic service for the country It has been a trying and tiring job But It has not been been and and will not be be thankless The great majority of the people realize that it was a difficult task and The Telegram on behalf of the people of Salt Lake City and of Utah warts waists to express its sincere thanks to the school authorities and the school teachers for this fine public service |
