D CRUICKSHANK official lecturer and photographer for fr the National Association Association Association As As- of Audubon Societies in a recent address to local members in Salt Lake City praised Utah's work in the establishment and development of of bird sanctuaries He noted particularly the federal bird refuge at Bear River bay which he said was of unusual size and offered excellent protection for wild fowl Sometimes we need an outsider to call our attention to our own accomplishments and advantages Many even many of I those who enjoy the benefits of our bird refuges during the hunting seasons do not realize how much is being done in this state for the protection of wild fowl There are more than acres of bird refuges in Utah The Bear River federal refuge alone has approximately acres The government operates another refuge at atthe atthe atthe the Strawberry reservoir which includes some acres The state operates six refuges which total close to acres They are areL L the refuge at Locomotive Springs at atthe the northera northern northern north north- ern era end of Great Salt Lake the Public ShootIng Shooting Shooting Shoot Shoot- ing Ground just north of the Bear Riv River r refuge the Ogden Bay refuge the Farmington Bay refuge the Clear Lake refuge near Fillmore Fill- Fill more and the Stewart Lake refuge in Uintah county Most of these state refuges could r be enlarged and there are other areas which could be developed If all were developed the total refuge area in the state would be at 1 least acres l Mark Anderson state fish and game commissioner commissioner com com- missioner declares the total area in state tate and and v i- federal bird refuges in n Utah is greater th than thanIn n In any other western state and that largely as a result of this cooperative federal and state program Utah is n now w one of the best states in the nation for wild fowl Utah's bird refuge developments de are of great importance to the national wild fowl conservation program because this state is ison ison on the Rocky Mountain flight lane followed by wild fowl from north to south The fine program carried out in Utah assures an abundant abundant abundant dant supply of wild fowl not only for this state but for much of f the west Most of this bird refuge development has taken place in recent years Much of the nar nations nation's nations nation's na na- na- na r tion's wild fowl was threatened with extinction extinction tion lion a decade ago Realizing the peril the federal government in cooperation with the states and many organizations of sportsmen and lovers of wild life launched a a nationwide nationwide nation nation- wide campaign in 1934 to restore wild fowl That campaign according to Mr Anderson has already shown great results And through the program of conservation and refuge development development de de- de- de the preservation of wild fowl in Utah especially and in the nation as asa a whole s seems ems now assured |
