Work for Bodied Abie t I GOVERNOR MAW has announced that plans J are being drawn up to have all employable employable employable employ employ- able persons who are receiving relief from the state perform some work for the state in return return return re re- re- re turn for the assistance being given them The welfare department is preparing lists of all such employable persons and projects are bein being ber be be- r in ing prepared by the state department of en ene It is an eX excellent ellent program It should mean both a saving to the state because work would i IJ iL be done by these men on relief which otherwise otherwise otherwise other other- wise would be done by regular state and it should be a saving of men because it is much better for any man to work for his bread than to get it as a free gift It may be argued with some justice that that but society owes every man a living living but certainly does does' not mean it owes him a living of idleness It merely means that society owes him the opportunity to earn a the Jiving living the chance to work for his bread It is an unhealthy unhealthy unhealthy un un- un- un worst re re- and of the healthy situation one of the depression to have a class of pi bodied able-bodied members of society supported in m idleness by the state We hope Governor Maw carries through his program to get something in return for the month the state is now to a spending for relief to and that a hard-and-fast hard policy is adopted to cut off as assistance assistance assistance as- as to any bodied able-bodied man who is Unwilling unwilling unwilling un un- willing to work for it
