Show a Cry Babie Babies Babies' Quiet In Their Wigwam I Observers Opine I By GEORGE KIRKSEY NEW YORK A April ril 10 UP When UP-When When the American league pennant race comes up for discussion the first thing the fan i fan in 1 the-stands the wants to know is What about Cleveland have havethe havethe havethe the Indians p patched up their dif differences and is e everybody i i pulling together on that club Many critics believe that the players' players revolt against Oscar Vitt last June cost the Indians the pennant Others and this group is in the minority believe that the Indians played right up to the limit of their capabilities last season At least one Indian ex-Indian thinks that the club even played above its head because of the publics public's reaction to the rebellion We didn't have a friend in the world last year after it became known that we had asked Mr Bradley to fire Oscar Vitt Vitt this I ex said All our troubles kind of welded us to together together together to- to I gether and we played as good or better than we were capable We might have been opposed to Vitt but once on that ball field we were all pulling together All AH Is Tranquil As far as outward appearances go the Indians seem to be one big happy family this spring Roger is largely the cause of the new attitude of the Indians Hes He's a square shooter talks very little and minds his own business The only way for fora a Cleveland player to get into trouble with Peck is to go looking looking looking look look- ing for it When Peck took over the club this spring he is supposed to have laid down only one rule rule every every player in bed by midnight Two new members of the Tribe say that they never heard about the rule but they take it for granted that the midnight curfew applies on the Indians as it does on all other clubs Peck let the Indians play poker bridge oridge and other card games in Fort Myers and he allowed the boys to quench their thirsts up to toa a certain point when Cleveland went to Havana to play the ers rs He is no hard taskmaster and believes a major league player should be able to take care of himself in a common sense way without having a nursemaid or a stool pigeon in attendance There is no doubt but that the Indians' Indians revolt of last season still is on some of the boys' boys minds Some of them have been cut deeply by the public as well as the press campaign against them Such names as cry babies mutineers mutineers mutineers mu and double still make some of the Tribe wince Wont Won't Be Forgotten Several American league clubs are not likely to let the Indians forget last years year's unhappy epi epi- epi- epi sode The Yankees and White Sox led by liquid fire Jimmy Dykes will give it to the Indians unmercifully all summer especially especially especially espe espe- any Indians that show signs of having rabbit ears and not liking references to the June mutiny The Indians have scattered six players around the American league off last years year's club John club John Johnny ny Allen to the Browns Ben Chapman to the Senators Johnny Humphries to the White Sox and Frankie Joe Dobson and Sammy Hale to the Red Sox Coach Johnny Bassler of the Vitt regime is now with the Browns Some of those fellows vs have no lost love for their ex There may be more than a little fun during the season y rr y Y y yg g q H ny es s f S S F OSCAR VITT |
