Show Enough of Broken Precedents I Ir r AUGUST A heat records shattered Mercury hits to crack another Salt Lake heat record Worst drought in years r Forest fire peril greatest In 30 years That's been the story In Salt Lake City and much of Utah all summer long Heat records Drought records Fire peril records One after another they've been set since the beginning of summer with the old record no sooner broken than a new high mark is set a few days later It makes good headlines but frankly were we're getting just a bit tired of it Wed We'd be mighty glad here on The Telegram to forego the headlines headlines head head- lines for the sake of a little relief from endless end end- less superlatives as to heat drought and fire peril Beyond the mere matter of personal inconvenience incon incon- this long spell of hot dry weather is becoming a really serious matter Farm crops are suffering Federal agricultural reports say that the states state's important beet sugar crop willbe will willbe willbe be way down this year ear due to bad weather with yields averaging only 85 tons an acre compared to a year 10 average of tons Forest and brush fires are destroying thousands thousands thou thou- sands ot- ot acres of valuable watershed cover and timber In the mountains of Utah Livestock rangelands are deteriorating because of lack of rain in the higher mountain areas with the possibility of serious loss to cattle and sheep If conditions do not improve In the near future Its It's about time for the gods of the weather to call off this business of breaking precedents Granted this seems to be a precedent-breaking precedent x year but just the same as far as the weather is concerned at least all of us in Utah would t be very happy to get back to normal and adhere strictly to the old familiar patterns |
