Show t I THE TARIFF AND HORSESHOES The Nation of New York tries to be sarcastic It calls attention to the fact that the war secreta secre- secre taI ta of of Great Britain has bas bought horseshoes in In another country for no other reason than that they are satisfactory both as regards price and efficiency but it turns out that the war secretary bought the shoes from the United States where wages and standard of li living ing are higher than any anT anywhere where else in the world And the Nation continuing continuing continuing ing says Thus after alter confessing by a tariff of 1 cent per pound that our nations nation's horseshoe makers are unable unable un un- able to withstand free competition with other nations nations nations na na- na- na we see these same horseshoe makers getting the business of a foreign nation which more than a private customer would give the benefit of every doubt to the English bidder in the face of that same competition The point the Nation tries to covertly make is that there is no necessity for any tariff on manufactured manufactured manufactured manu manu- horseshoes in this country and possibly there is not now But unwittingly the Nation gives away the fact that because of the tariff the theof industry industry industry indus indus- try of making horseshoes was inaugurated in this country on a great scale and then in a little while the competition became very verr close and the judges of horseshoes are so competent in this country that only the very finest article will sell at all because horseshoe making is a fine art like painting a picture picture picture pic pic- ture or writing poetry and of all the blacksmiths in the country not one in a hundred is an expert horseshoe maker and because of that competition the art is so perfected that the men who have ha the cavalry and artillery horses in Great Britain in charge have informed the government that in free trade England the artisans there have grown so stupid that it is impossible to get a good horseshoe in the kingdom and the government has to go to a country where the genuine article is made |
